The problem:
Family Resource Center is built from a former strip mall which is made architecturally interesting, but organizationally difficult, by jutting porches, variegated entrances and multiple niches. FRC customers, some non-English speaking and many under stress, have had difficulty finding the appropriate agency to assist them.
The problem solvers: A volunteer team from the Leadership Institute interviewed agencies, researched signage and recruited a premier wayfinding expert, Kelly Brandon, Kelly Brandon Design, who
donated his time to design a program to get clients to their providers. The City of Bellevue provided a major grant to purchase signage for the campus.
The solution: During 2001 campus agencies began using common directional language and emphasized the same directional cues, among other tactics. Maps were placed throughout the campus,
as were other directory assistance tools. A newer, brighter corner sign was added to signal the arrival at the campus, and smaller lighted parking lot entry ways now assist 30,000 campus customers to
better see the campus as a whole. Back to ARCHIVES
